Center of Coals & Biomass Energy Research

Synopsis

This center was initially established as ‘Fossil Fuels & Biomass Research Group’ since 1996 with the main objective to enhance the utilization of clean coal and biomass resources for energy production. After more than 16 years of research experiences, in 2013, the research center was then formalized under Faculty of Applied Sciences.

Research Organization

Focus Research Areas

  • Coal Desulphurisation : Removal of sulphur from coals via pre-treatment and post-treament techniques
  • Coal Liquefaction studies: Conversion of coal to liquid fuel using high temperature and pressure reactor system.
  • Coal-Biomass Blending : Pyrolysis and combustion of mixed biomass and coals via thermogravimetric analyser (TGA) .
  • Supercritical Fluid Extraction : Extraction of bio-oil from biomass (Jatropha Curcas L. sp., rubber seed, & single cell green microalgae) at supercritical state for biodiesel production.
  • Cultivation and Pharmaceutical aspect of Green Microalgae : Systematic mass cultivation of single cell green microalgae for biodiesel and pharmaceutical products.
  • Novel Adsorbents from mixed biomass : for coal flue gases adsorption system and waste water treatment.
  • Activated Carbon via microwave irradiation technique : Production of super-capacitor for energy storage.
