On March 14, 2020, the BIOSMARTEAM, accompanied by two lecturers of Faculty Applied Sciences, Dr Siti Khairiyah Mohd Hatta and Dr Mohd Shafiq Aazmi have volunteered in “Free Tree Society: Restore the Nature” programme at Taman Tugu Nursery, Kuala Lumpur. Free Tree Society (FTS) Kuala Lumpur is an organization that promotes environmental stewardship and environmental awareness. A total of 42 students were involved in this volunteering programme with the aim to raise awareness to the society in the importance of planting and saving trees, and to combat the unfavorable effects of climate change. The programme starts with a Jungle Walk featuring talks by the FTS president; Ms Baida Hercus on conservation of ecosystems and climate followed by Environmental Solutions Talks, focusing on current issues such as water scarcity and rainwater harvesting, composting and waste reduction. The highlight activity held on that day was the Planting Workshop where the students were taught a proper technique on soil mixing, propagation, and transplanting. The programme ended with a Nursery Management segment that includes a hands-on activity of plant care and nursery maintenance. The programme was a huge success in promoting an outdoor classroom focusing on environmental awareness and education.
